The Quality Corner
What Does That Mean?
by
Gerald Wilbanks
Documentation & Engineering Services
The terminology of “Quality” can sometimes seem very confusing and it is necessary to go to some base definitions. The goal is always the same and that is “Meet Customer Expectations on Time and deliver Value in the Product or Service”. This is the aim of all companies and corporate entities that want to be successful and be around for a long time. To this end, there are four key areas that must be addressed and the definitions are key to understanding this approach to business.
A Quality Management System (QMS) is a formalized system that documents the structure, responsibilities and processes required to achieve effective quality management. In other words, this is the Procedures and Work Instructions that guide the work performance. These should have been developed by the people in the work processes and reflect the best practices. These procedures cover all actions including accounting, manufacturing, sales, engineering, and all operations of the company.
Quality Management (QM) is the application of a quality management system in managing a process to achieve maximum customer satisfaction at the lowest overall cost in the organization while continuing to improve the process. Essentially, this states that a great system is useless, if it is not used and applied by the people involved. This is the action of implementing the procedures and guides that have been published.
Quality Assurance (QA) is all the planned systematic actions that are taken to ensure consistent methods are being used and the work activities comply with the company and customer requirements. This includes the auditing actions to verify the use of the work process procedures by the employees. The result is an assurance that the best practices are being employed for consistent results.
Quality Control (QC) is the operational techniques and activities used to fulfill requirements for quality. These include the steps and actions needed to correct or guide the process to attain a satisfactory result. This involves checking the results, testing the outputs, and actual verification that the service or product is meeting expectations. These are the hard steps that are necessary to control the final quality of the deliverable.
These terms are consistent without regard to the final deliverable being a product or service. In either case, there should be a way to do something, something being done that way, assurance that everyone is involved, and hard verification of the final output. This is actually the common sense way of operating a business venture to obtain the most consistent results at the best cost.
